Q.Using kinetic theory, show how

(a) Charles's law (V∝TV \propto T at constant PP) and
(b) Avogadro's law (equal volumes of different gases at the same PP and TT contain equal numbers of molecules) both follow from the theory.

From kinetic theory (Section 9.3-9.5), PV=NkBTPV = Nk_BT.

  1. Charles's law. At constant pressure PP and for a fixed amount of gas NN, rearrange to make VV the subject:

    V=NkBPTV = \frac{Nk_B}{P}T

    Since NN, kBk_B and PP are all held fixed, everything in front of TT is a constant, so V∝TV \propto T -- Charles's law.
  2. Avogadro's law. Consider two DIFFERENT gases occupying the same volume VV, at the same pressure PP and same temperature TT. Rearranging PV=NkBTPV=Nk_BT to make NN the subject, N=PVkBTN = \frac{PV}{k_BT} …
