A Genetically Modified Organism is defined by the deliberate, engineered presence of a gene that would not naturally be found in that organism's genome, introduced through the techniques of recombinant DNA technology (restriction enzymes, vectors, and transformation) rather than through natural breeding or mutation.

A GM bacterium example is recombinant E. coli engineered to carry the human insulin gene (or, separately, the genes for the insulin A and B chains), which the bacterium then expresses to manufacture human insulin.
