PCR amplification is exponential because the DNA strands newly synthesised in one cycle themselves become templates that primers can bind to and extend in the very next cycle, so the total amount of target DNA present roughly doubles with every completed cycle, starting from whatever amount of template was present at the beginning of the reaction.
