Malaria is caused by the protozoan parasite Plasmodium (e.g. P. vivax, P. falciparum) and is a vector-borne disease.
Process of transmission (step by step):
- A female Anopheles mosquito is the vector (only the female bites, as it needs blood for its eggs).
- When an infected mosquito bites a healthy person, it injects saliva containing the infective stage, the sporozoites, into the bloodstream.
- The sporozoites reach the liver, multiply in liver cells, then enter red blood cells (RBCs), where they multiply further and rupture the RBCs.
- Rupture of RBCs releases the parasites and a toxin, haemozoin, which is responsible for the recurring chill and high fever every 3–4 days.
- In the RBCs some parasites form male and female gametocytes. When another female Anopheles bites this infected person, it sucks up these gametocytes. …
