A vaccine works by presenting a harmless form of an antigen so the body forms memory cells and antibodies. Vaccines are classified by how that antigen is prepared:
i) Live attenuated vaccine — contains a weakened (attenuated), living but non-virulent pathogen. Example: BCG vaccine (against tuberculosis); also MMR and oral polio (Sabin) vaccine.
ii) Toxoid vaccine — contains an inactivated bacterial toxin (toxoid) that has lost toxicity but keeps antigenicity. Example: Tetanus toxoid (given as part of DPT); also diphtheria toxoid.
iii) Inactivated / killed vaccine — contains the whole pathogen killed by heat or chemicals. Example: Salk polio vaccine (IPV); also killed cholera and rabies vaccines.
