Lanthanoid uses. Mischmetal, a pyrophoric alloy of lanthanoid metals (chiefly cerium and lanthanum) with a small amount of iron, is used to make the sparking flint in cigarette and gas lighters, and is also alloyed with magnesium to give lightweight, high-temperature-strength alloys used in jet-engine components and other aerospace/weapons applications. Separately, neodymium alloyed with iron and boron (Nd2Fe14B\text{Nd}_2\text{Fe}_{14}\text{B}) produces the strongest class of permanent magnets commercially available, used extremely widely in electric motors, generators, headphones and hard-disk drives.
