Doping is the deliberate, controlled addition of a small trace of impurity atoms to an otherwise pure semiconductor crystal, to engineer its conductivity and dominant carrier type. A PENTAVALENT dopant (Group 15, e.g. phosphorus, arsenic) has five valence electrons; four form the usual covalent bonds with the host lattice, leaving a fifth, loosely bound electron that is easily freed as a conduction electron -- called a donor impurity, and the resulting material is n-type (majority carriers: electrons).
