Step 1 - Reaction with acid

Aluminium dissolves in dilute hydrochloric acid, being oxidised to Al3+\text{Al}^{3+} while H+\text{H}^+ is reduced to H2\text{H}_2 gas:

2Al+6HCl→2AlCl3+3H2↑2\text{Al} + 6\text{HCl} \rightarrow 2\text{AlCl}_3 + 3\text{H}_2\uparrow

Step 2 - Reaction with base

Aluminium also dissolves in aqueous sodium hydroxide, forming soluble sodium aluminate and liberating hydrogen gas:

2Al+2NaOH+2H2O→2NaAlO2+3H2↑2\text{Al} + 2\text{NaOH} + 2\text{H}_2\text{O} \rightarrow 2\text{NaAlO}_2 + 3\text{H}_2\uparrow

Step 3 - Why this shows amphoterism …
