Concept understanding — ageing as a biological process
Ageing is a gradual, universal and inevitable biological process. It slowly reshapes the body from the inside, affecting nearly every system. Three of these changes are the most significant.
1. Decline in sensory abilities
Vision and hearing are affected first. The lens of the eye loses flexibility, so focusing on nearby objects becomes hard; seeing in dim light also becomes difficult. Hearing weakens, especially for high-pitched sounds. Left unaddressed, these losses can lead to social withdrawal.
2. Reduced cardiovascular and respiratory efficiency
The heart pumps blood less forcefully and blood vessels lose elasticity, so the heart works harder and blood pressure tends to rise. Lung capacity shrinks and the exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide becomes less efficient. As a result, an older person tires more easily during activity and takes longer to recover.
3. Loss of muscle mass and bone density …
