Concept understanding — the three points of every lever
A lever is a rigid bar that turns about a fixed point. Every lever, whether a crowbar, a seesaw or a bone of the human body, has exactly three functional points:
- Fulcrum (F) — the fixed point, the axis of rotation. The lever does not translate as a whole; it rotates around the fulcrum.
- Effort (E) — the point where the applied force (muscular effort) acts.
- Load / Resistance (R) — the point where the weight or resistance to be overcome acts.
The relative arrangement of these three points defines the class of the lever:
| Class | Arrangement | Body example |
|---|---|---|
| First class | Fulcrum between effort and load | Nodding of the head at the atlanto-occipital joint |
| Second class | Load between fulcrum and effort | Rising on the toes (calf raise) |
| Third class | Effort between fulcrum and load | The biceps curl — most levers in the human body |
