The Partial Curl-Up test measures abdominal strength and endurance in children aged 9–18 years by counting the maximum number of correctly performed curl-ups completed at a controlled cadence until exhaustion or technique failure.

The Sports Authority of India launched the Khelo India Fitness Test as a nationwide school fitness assessment programme to evaluate the physical fitness of students from Class 4 to Class 12. The battery includes tests for strength, endurance, flexibility, speed, and cardiovascular fitness. Among the strength components, the Partial Curl-Up (also called the Sit-and-Curl-Up) is the designated test for abdominal muscular strength and endurance across all age groups in this protocol.

The test measures how many times a student can perform a controlled curl-up movement while maintaining proper form. Unlike traditional sit-ups that involve the hip flexors heavily, the partial curl-up isolates the abdominal muscles by limiting the range of motion and controlling the speed.

Procedure of the Partial Curl-Up Test

Equipment and Setup:

The test requires a flat, clean surface (a mat or smooth floor), a measuring strip (usually 4.5 inches or approximately 11.4 cm wide for younger children and adults), and a metronome or audio track set to 40 beats per minute (one curl-up every three seconds—up on one beat, down on the next, pause on the third).

Starting Position:

The student lies flat on their back with knees bent at approximately 90 degrees, feet flat on the floor about 12 inches from the buttocks, and arms straight alongside the body with palms facing down. The fingertips touch the near edge of the measuring strip placed perpendicular to the body at the fingertips. The head rests on the mat in a neutral position.

Note

A partner or teacher may hold the student's feet lightly to prevent slipping, though in the standard SAI protocol the feet should remain unanchored to ensure the abdominal muscles do the work.

Execution:

On the signal to begin, the student curls the upper body forward slowly, keeping the lower back in contact with the floor. The chin should remain tucked (about a fist's distance from the chest), and the curl continues until the fingertips slide across the measuring strip and touch the far edge. The shoulders lift off the mat, but the movement is a curl, not a full sit-up. The student then lowers back down under control until the shoulder blades and head touch the mat again, completing one repetition.

The movement is paced to the metronome: curl up on beat one, return on beat two, rest on beat three. The student continues performing curl-ups in this rhythm without pausing between repetitions.

Termination and Scoring:

The test continues until the student: …
