Both use a sturdy chair so the test is safe for an older adult.
Because the person is Raghav's grandfather's friend — an older adult — the right battery is the fitness test designed for senior citizens, which uses a chair to keep the movements safe. One item checks lower-body strength, the other lower-body flexibility.
1. Lower-body strength — Chair Stand Test
Procedure. Place a sturdy, armless chair against a wall so it cannot slip. The person sits in the middle of the chair with the back straight, the arms crossed over the chest (each hand on the opposite shoulder) and the feet flat on the floor about shoulder-width apart. On the signal to begin, they stand up to a full upright position and then sit back down completely — that is one stand. They are encouraged to complete as many full stands as they can in 30 seconds.
Scoring. The score is the total number of complete stand-ups done in 30 seconds. If the person is more than halfway up to standing when the time runs out, that attempt is counted as one full stand. A higher count means greater lower-body strength.
2. Lower-body flexibility — Chair Sit-and-Reach Test
Procedure. With the chair again stabilised against a wall, the person sits on the front edge of the seat. One foot stays flat on the floor; the other leg is extended straight out in front with the knee straight, the heel on the floor and the ankle bent at about 90°. Keeping the extended knee straight, they place one hand over the other and bend forward slowly at the hips, sliding the hands down toward the toes, and hold the farthest position for about 2 seconds. …
