Single hop distance is the greatest ground distance a sky wave covers in one ionospheric bounce — up to about 4000 km for the F2 layer.
When a radio wave is beamed into the ionosphere it is refracted back and returns to earth at some distance from the transmitter. The single hop distance is the maximum distance, measured along the earth's surface, between the transmitting antenna and the first receiving antenna reached in one such reflection.
