Q.Identify the radio waves which are refracted by the ionosphere.

Sky wave propagation uses reflection off the ionosphere's charged layers to bounce radio waves back to Earth, allowing signals to travel far beyond the horizon.

In sky wave (or ionospheric) propagation, radio waves transmitted from an antenna travel upward and strike the ionosphere — the ionised layers of the Earth's upper atmosphere. Because of the way the refractive index of the ionosphere varies with electron density, waves of suitable frequency are bent back down towards the Earth's surface, where they can be received far beyond the line of sight, and can even reflect multiple times between the ionosphere and the Earth's surface for very long-distance communication.

Sky-wave propagation relies on ionospheric reflection, which works only over roughly the 2–30 MHz (HF) range; frequencies far below or above this either don't propagate this way or pass straight through the ionosphere.

For beyond-the-horizon communication using sky waves, the signal must be reflected back to Earth by the ionosphere. This total-internal-reflection-like bending works for frequencies roughly up to the ionosphere's critical frequency (typically tens of MHz). Checking the options:

• 10 kHz is far too low; such very-low frequencies propagate as ground/surface waves, not by ionospheric sky-wave reflection. …

Sky-wave propagation relies on ionospheric reflection, which works well only in the HF range (roughly 3–30 MHz); much lower or much higher frequencies don't reflect usefully off the ionosphere. This is from the Communication Systems chapter, not part of the current NCERT syllabus — answered for practice but flagged out-of-syllabus.

• 10 kHz — too low; very-low frequencies mostly follow ground-wave propagation, not sky wave.
• 10 MHz — squarely in the HF band; the ionosphere reflects HF waves back to Earth, enabling long-distance, beyond-the-horizon communication. ✓ …

Long-distance short-wave (HF) broadcasting relies on the ionosphere reflecting the signal back to Earth — this is sky-wave propagation.

Radio waves can propagate in three main ways:

• Ground wave propagation — the wave travels along the surface of the earth; used for low-frequency signals (AM medium wave, up to ~2 MHz) but range is limited by ground absorption.
• Sky wave propagation — the wave is transmitted towards the sky and gets reflected by the ionosphere (a charged layer of the upper atmosphere) back down to earth. Because the ionosphere effectively acts like a mirror at these frequencies, the wave can bounce between the ionosphere and the ground (or ocean surface) multiple times and travel very long distances, well beyond line of sight. This is how short-wave (HF, roughly 3–30 MHz) broadcasting achieves long-distance/interna …

In sky-wave propagation, waves in the HF band (3–30 MHz) reflect off the ionosphere back to Earth, allowing signals to be received far beyond the horizon.

Sky wave propagation: A radio wave transmitted at a suitable angle towards the sky is bent back towards the Earth's surface by reflection from the ionosphere (a region of the upper atmosphere, roughly 100–400 km up, ionised by solar radiation). By undergoing one or more such reflections between the ionosphere and the Earth's surface, the signal can travel over very large distances — well beyond the line of sight/horizon that limits ground-wave propagation.

HF radio waves (3-30 MHz) are reflected back to Earth by the ionosphere, so they travel by ionospheric (sky-wave) propagation rather than as ground waves or line-of-sight waves.

Radio wave propagation modes depend on frequency:

Ground wave (surface wave) propagation is used mainly for low and medium frequency (LF/MF) waves, which travel along the Earth's surface but suffer heavy attenuation at higher frequencies, limiting them to shorter ranges.

Sky wave (ionospheric) propagation applies to high frequency (HF, 3-30 MHz) waves: they are transmitted upward, reflected (refracted back) by the ionised layers of the ionosphere, and return to Earth, allowing them to be received far beyond the horizon -- even across continents -- through single or multiple hops.

This question is from Communication Systems, a topic no longer present in the current MSBSHSE Class-12 Physics chapter structure on this platform.

Radio waves that travel upward, reflect off the ionised layers of the ionosphere, and return to Earth are called sky waves — this is the mechanism used for long-distance shortwave radio propagation. (Ground waves travel along the Earth's surface; space waves travel in a strai …

Sky-wave mode works over about $3$–$30$ MHz.

Concept. In sky-wave (skip) propagation the signal is radiated upward and reflected back to Earth by the ionosphere, allowing long-distance communication.
