[!TLDR]

Space-wave propagation carries VHF and higher signals in a straight line-of-sight path between antennas, limited by the radio horizon.

The space wave, also called the line-of-sight wave, is very useful for VHF and higher-frequency propagation. It consists of the direct wave travelling straight from the transmitting to the receiving antenna, together with the ground-reflected wave; the two together make up the space wave.

Because the earth is curved, line-of-sight has a limit called the horizon. The optical horizon (OH) is the farthest point visible to the naked eye, while radio waves travel a little farther to the radio horizon (RH), which is about 43\tfrac{4}{3} times the optical horizon:

RH=43 OHRH = \frac{4}{3}\,OH …
