Step 2. Recall each plant's first stable CO2-fixation product. In a C4 plant such as maize, CO2 is first captured by PEP carboxylase to form the 4-carbon oxaloacetic acid (OAA) — the compound whose 4-carbon count gives 'C4 plants' their name. In a C3 plant such as wheat, CO2 is fixed directly by Rubisco in the Calvin cycle to form the 3-carbon 3-phosphoglyceric acid (3-PGA) — the compound whose 3-carbon count gives 'C3 plants' their name.
