Step 1. Recall the roles accessory pigments play. Accessory pigments (chlorophyll b and carotenoids — carotenes and xanthophylls) absorb light at wavelengths chlorophyll a itself absorbs weakly, and pass that captured energy on to chlorophyll a for use in photosynthesis; carotenoids additionally protect chlorophyll molecules from being damaged by excess light energy (photo-oxidation).

Step 2. Consider the loss of light-capture range. Without these accessory pigments, only chlorophyll a's own narrow absorption bands (mainly certain blue and red wavelengths) would be available to drive photosynthesis, so a large part of the incident sunlight across other wavelengths would go completely unused, lowering overall photosynthetic efficiency. …
