Step 1. Recall the division of labour in C4 leaves. In C4 plants, mesophyll cells carry out only the CO2-capturing (C4) half of the pathway — fixing atmospheric CO2 via PEP carboxylase into OAA, then malate — while bundle-sheath cells receive that malate, decarboxylate it, and run the Calvin cycle.

Step 2. Explain why the Calvin cycle is confined to the bundle sheath. Decarboxylation of malate in the bundle-sheath cells releases CO2 at a much higher local concentration than exists anywhere else in the leaf, including the mesophyll (where atmospheric CO2 is comparatively dilute). This high concentration is exactly what pushes Rubisco toward its carboxylase (CO2-fixing) role rather than its oxygenase (photorespiratory) role. …
