Q.Correct the pathway and name it. [Diagram printed in the book, labelled 'C3 pathway', with the following elements as extracted from the page: Mesophyll cell — PEP, CO2; leading to OAA; OAA converted to Malic Acid; Malic Acid transported to the Bundle Sheath Cell; CO2 released in the Bundle Sheath Cell.]

Step 2. Match these components to a known pathway. PEP (phosphoenolpyruvic acid), OAA (oxaloacetic acid) and malic acid are the defining intermediates of the C4 (Hatch-Slack) pathway, and the mesophyll-to-bundle-sheath transport step is exactly the C4 pathway's CO2-shuttling mechanism. None of these compounds (PEP, OAA, malic acid) or this two-cell-type shuttle appear anywhere in the ordinary C3 (Calvin) cycle, which instead runs entirely through RuBP, 3-PGA and 3-PGAL inside a single mesophyll-type cell.
Step 3. Identify the error. The diagram is therefore mislabelled — it is printed as 'C3 pathway' but its actual content (PEP/OAA/malic acid, mesophyll-to-bundle-sheath transport) is unmistakably the C4 pathway. …
