Step 1. Note the numerical disparity. In a C4 leaf, the bundle-sheath cells that actually run the Calvin cycle are relatively few compared with the far more numerous mesophyll cells surrounding them (and compared with the number of Calvin-cycle-running mesophyll cells in an equivalent C3 leaf).

Step 2. Recall what feeds those few cells. Every one of the many surrounding mesophyll cells is continuously capturing atmospheric CO2 (via PEP carboxylase) and funnelling it, as malate, into the bundle-sheath cells — so the comparatively small number of bundle-sheath cells receives a concentrated CO2 supply pooled from a much larger catchment of mesophyll cells.

Step 3. Recall the efficiency this buys. Because CO2 is delivered to the bundle-sheath chloroplasts at high local concentration, Rubisco there runs almost entirely as a carboxylase, with photorespiration suppressed — so each bundle-sheath cell fixes carbon far more efficiently, per unit time, than an ordinary C3 mesophyll cell (which faces low, unconcentrated atmospheric CO2 and loses a share of its fixed carbon to photorespiration). …
