Step 1. Recall the electron flow in non-cyclic photophosphorylation. Electrons released from PS-II travel through an electron-transport chain to PS-I, and from there are handed on to reduce NADP+ to NADPH2 — they never return to PS-II, unlike in cyclic photophosphorylation.

Step 2. Identify PS-II's problem. Having given away its electrons permanently (to the linear/non-cyclic flow), PS-II's reaction centre is left oxidised and electron-deficient, and it needs a fresh electron supply to keep functioning.

Step 3. Identify the solution — photolysis of water. PS-II regains its electrons by splitting water (4H₂O → 2H₂O + O₂↑ + 4H⁺ + 4e⁻), which supplies the replacement electrons (as well as protons that help reduce NADP+, and oxygen released as a byproduct). …
