Ordinary respiration is an energy-yielding process that breaks down food (glucose) using O2, in mitochondria, in every living cell, all the time (light or dark), releasing usable ATP. Photorespiration, by contrast, is a wasteful process linked to the Calvin cycle that occurs only in the light, in photosynthesising cells, spanning three organelles (chloroplast, peroxisome, mitochondrion); rather than yielding usable energy, it consumes O2 and releases CO2 while wasting roughly 25% of already-fixed carbon, and it happens only when Rubisco is forced into its oxygenase role by high O2/low CO2 conditions.
Step 1b. Absorption spectrum vs. action spectrum. The absorption spectrum plots how much light a pigment (chlorophyll) absorbs at each wavelength — a purely chemical/optical measurement of the pigment itself. The action spectrum plots the actual rate of photosynthesis achieved at each wavelength — a functional/biological measurement. The two curves for chlorophyll closely coincide, which is the evidence that chlorophyll drives photosynthesis. …
