Step 1. Identify which plants consume more than 18 ATP. The Calvin cycle alone needs 18 ATP per glucose; C4 plants need an additional 12 ATP to regenerate PEP from pyruvate (since that regeneration produces AMP, requiring 2 ATP to restore each usable ATP), bringing their total to 30 ATP per glucose.

Step 2. Recall why C4 plants pay this extra cost. The extra ATP powers the CO2-concentrating pump — fixing CO2 in the mesophyll as OAA/malate and releasing it at high concentration in the bundle sheath — which keeps Rubisco's local CO2:O2 ratio high.

Step 3. Connect this to tropical conditions. Tropical regions are characterised by exactly the high temperature, high light intensity, and often lower internal CO2 (from partly closed stomata conserving water) that push Rubisco toward its wasteful oxygenase (photorespiratory) activity in an ordinary C3 plant. The C4 CO2-concentrating mechanism suppresses this photorespiration almost entirely. …
