Step 2. In fibres particularly, this thickening can be so extensive that it nearly fills the entire cell lumen, leaving only a very narrow central cavity — this is what gives fibres their high tensile mechanical strength.
Step 3. Despite this heavy, rigid thickening, the wall is not solid: it is interrupted by numerous narrow pits (unbranched and oblique in fibres, deep, branched and straight in sclereids), which is how adjoining sclerenchyma cells stay physically interconnected. …
