Step 1. Number and arrangement: a dicot stem has a comparatively small number of vascular bundles arranged in a single, orderly ring around a central pith; a monocot stem has numerous bundles scattered irregularly throughout an undifferentiated ground tissue, with no ring and no distinct pith.

Step 2. Cambium/growth capacity: dicot bundles are OPEN, retaining a strip of cambium between xylem and phloem, so the stem can undergo secondary growth; monocot bundles are CLOSED, with no cambium at all, so secondary growth never occurs regardless of how many bundles are present.

Step 3. Sheathing: each monocot bundle is individually wrapped in its own sclerenchymatous bundle sheath, a feature not emphasised in the dicot arrangement (where pericycle patches over the bundles serve a related protective role instead). …
