Step 1. A stoma (plural stomata) is a small pore in the epidermis, most numerous on the lower surface of a dorsiventral leaf and on both surfaces of an isobilateral leaf.

Step 2. Each stoma is bounded by a specialised pair of cells called guard cells; their shape differs by group — kidney-shaped in dicots, dumbbell-shaped in monocots.

Step 3. Unlike ordinary epidermal cells, guard cells contain a small number of chloroplasts, giving them limited photosynthetic capacity and letting them respond directly to light.

Step 4. A ring of subsidiary cells, structurally distinct from ordinary epidermal cells, surrounds the guard-cell pair; the guard cells, the pore and the subsidiary cells together are called the stomatal apparatus. …
