A representative monocot root (e.g. maize) repeats a dicot root's basic outside-in sequence - piliferous layer, parenchymatous cortex, casparian-strip endodermis with passage cells opposite the protoxylem, single-layered pericycle - but diverges sharply once the stele is reached. Its vascular tissue is polyarch (many, rather than four, protoxylem groups arranged around the radial system) though still exarch, in contrast to a dicot root's typically tetrarch arrangement. Its conjunctive tissue, between the xylem and phloem patches, is mostly sclerenchymatous rather than parenchymatous, and is never converted into vascular cambium - which is exactly why monocot roots cannot undergo secondary growth or thickening the way dicot roots can.
