Thermal expansion (§7.5) shows up throughout engineering and everyday life. Small GAPS are deliberately left between railway rail sections (and in the expansion joints of bridges and concrete pavements) so that thermal expansion on a hot day does not buckle them (Numerical vi works this out quantitatively). SHRINK-FITTING exploits controlled expansion: a metal ring or wheel-rim slightly smaller than the object it must fit is heated so it expands enough to slip over, then cools and contracts back down to grip tightly (Numerical vii, the blacksmith's iron ring, is exactly this). BIMETALLIC STRIPS (two different metals with different alpha values bonded together) bend when heated, since one metal expands more than the other -- used in thermostats and fire alarms. LIQUID-IN-GLASS THERMOMETERS themselves work because mercury or alcohol expands (by volume) far more than the glass capillary containing it, so a small volume change shows up as a large, easily-read rise up the narrow tube.
