Step 1. After recombinant DNA (rDNA) has been formed by joining foreign DNA to a vector, it must be transferred into a competent host cell -- usually a bacterium -- by a process called transformation.

Step 2. The bacterial cell membrane does not normally allow large, charged DNA molecules to cross it freely.
