The adrenal gland's two regions each produce their own characteristic disorders.
Step 1 (Addison's disease). Caused by hyposecretion of both mineralocorticoids and glucocorticoids from the adrenal cortex; features low blood sugar, low blood Na+, high blood K+, increased loss of Na+ and water in urine, and consequent weight loss, weakness, nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea.
Step 2 (Cushing's disease). Caused by hypersecretion of glucocorticoids; features high blood sugar with glucose appearing in urine, raised blood Na+, raised blood volume, high blood pressure, obesity, and wasting of the limb muscles. …
