Thyroid disorders split into hyperthyroidism (Grave's disease) and hypothyroidism (cretinism in infants, myxoedema in adults), plus iodine-deficiency simple goitre.

Thyroid gland disorders fall into three named categories, covered earlier in the chapter.

Step 1 (Hyperthyroidism/Grave's disease). Raised thyroid hormone levels increase overall metabolic rate and body temperature -- sweating, hot flushes, rapid respiration, nervous sensitivity; in adults, the specific combination of protruding eyeballs (exophthalmos), raised BMR and weight loss is named Grave's disease, additionally producing a faster heartbeat, higher blood pressure, nervousness, irritability and finger tremor.

Step 2 (Hypothyroidism -- infants). Deficient thyroid hormone from infancy causes cretinism: reduced BMR and oxidation, stunted growth (the skeleton fails to grow properly), mental retardation, dry skin, thick tongue, prolonged neonatal jaundice, lethargy and constipation -- treatable if thyroid hormone is given early. …
