Thyroid atrophy means less thyroxine, so the body would show the effects of hypothyroidism -- low BMR, low body temperature and, in adults, myxoedema-like symptoms.

Atrophy (wasting/shrinking) of the thyroid gland reduces its ability to secrete thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3).

Step 1. With less functional thyroid tissue, T3/T4 secretion falls, producing hypothyroidism.

Step 2. Since thyroxine normally regulates basal metabolic rate, stimulates protein synthesis/tissue growth, and aids thermoregulation, its deficiency lowers metabolic rate, slows heart rate, and lowers body temperature.

Step 3. In an adult, this produces myxoedema -- puffy, thickened skin and subcutaneous tissue (especially face/extremities), lowered alertness and intelligence, low blood pressure, and retarded sexual development. …
