Okazaki fragments form only on the lagging strand because DNA polymerase can synthesise DNA solely in the 5' to 3' direction, forcing that strand to be made discontinuously, away from the replication fork.

Step 1. The two parental DNA strands are antiparallel, but DNA polymerase can only add new nucleotides onto a free 3'-OH end, i.e. it always synthesises in the 5' to 3' direction.

Step 2. On the leading-strand template (running 3' to 5' toward the fork), the new strand can therefore be synthesised continuously, growing in the same direction the fork is opening. …
