Short Answer II · Q4

Q.Identify the labelled structures on the following diagram of translation.

Exercise diagram of translation: an mRNA with the codons CCG GCC ACU CCC carries a circular structure C; a clover-shaped tRNA with the anticodon UGA (labelled A) and a red square at its tip (labelled B) approaches it, beside a second tRNA with the anticodon GGG

A is the anticodon of a tRNA, B is the amino acid attached to that tRNA, and C is the ribosome moving along the mRNA.

What the diagram shows. A single strand of mRNA is drawn with the codons CCG, GCC, ACU and CCC; a large circle (C) sits on it, and two clover-shaped tRNA molecules approach it, one with UGA and the other with GGG on the loop, each with a red square at its opposite end.

Part A - anticodon. The three unpaired bases on the anticodon loop of a tRNA are its anticodon; they pair by hydrogen bonds, antiparallel, with the complementary codon on the mRNA during codon recognition at the A site (section 4.5.3). The tRNA labelled A shows the bases UGA, and the second tRNA's GGG would pair with the mRNA codon CCC.

Part B - amino acid. The red square at the 3' acceptor end of the tRNA is the amino acid it carries (the tRNA-amino acid complex formed after activation with ATP); it is joined to the growing chain by a peptide bond. …
