Q.Write reaction showing conversion of ethanenitrile into ethanol.
Step 1. Hydrolyse the nitrile to the acid (section 12.5.1). Ethanenitrile (CH3-CN), with water and dilute HCl on heating, is hydrolysed all the way through to acetic acid: CH3-CN + 2H2O + dil.HCl --heat--> CH3-COOH + NH4Cl.
Step 2. Reduce the acid to the alcohol (section 12.9.7). Acetic acid, treated with lithium aluminium hydride in dry ether, is reduced to the primary alcohol: CH3-COOH --LiAlH4, dry ether--> CH3-CH2-OH.
Step 3. Combine into the overall conversion. CH3-CN --(H2O, dil.HCl, heat)--> CH3-COOH --(LiAlH4, dry ether)--> CH3-CH2-OH -- so ethanenitrile is converted to ethanol in exactly two steps, each a named reaction this chapter already covers.
CH3-CN --(H2O, dil. HCl, heat)--> CH3-COOH --(LiAlH4, dry ether)--> CH3-CH2-OH (ethanol).
