Form the Grignard reagent. p-Bromoisopropylbenzene, treated with magnesium in dry ether, converts its ring -Br into a ring -MgBr (a Grignard reagent), leaving the isopropyl side chain completely untouched: p-Br-C6H4-CH(CH3)2 + Mg, dry ether, gives p-(CH3)2CH-C6H4-MgBr.
Step 2. React with dry ice (section 12.5.6). The Grignard reagent is added to solid CO2 (dry ice), which both serves as the CO2 reagent and cools the exothermic addition: p-(CH3)2CH-C6H4-MgBr + O=C=O gives the magnesium-carboxylate complex, p-(CH3)2CH-C6H4-COOMgBr.
Step 3. Acid hydrolysis. The complex, treated with dilute HCl (aqueous acid), gives the free carboxylic acid: p-(CH3)2CH-C6H4-COOMgBr + H2O/dil.HCl gives p-(CH3)2CH-C6H4-COOH (p-isopropylbenzoic acid) + Mg(Br)(OH). …
