A methylmagnesium halide Grignard reagent adds to solid CO2CO_2 (dry ice), and acid workup gives acetic acid.

Ethanoic (acetic) acid can be prepared from dry ice (CO2CO_2) via a Grignard synthesis:

Step 1: methylmagnesium iodide (prepared from methyl iodide and Mg in dry ether) is added to crushed dry ice. The nucleophilic methyl carbanion-like carbon of the Grignard reagent attacks the electrophilic carbon of CO2CO_2:

CH3MgI+CO2→CH3−COO−MgICH_3MgI + CO_2 \rightarrow CH_3-COO-MgI (magnesium salt of acetic acid)

Step 2: the magnesium salt is hydrolysed with dilute acid (H3O+H_3O^+), liberating ethanoic acid:

CH3COOMgI+H3O+→CH3COOH+Mg(OH)ICH_3COOMgI + H_3O^+ \rightarrow CH_3COOH + Mg(OH)I (or Mg2+Mg^{2+} salts, depending on conditions)
