Atom economy compares the desired product's mass to the total mass of all products; benzaldehyde is made by Gattermann–Koch synthesis, adipic acid by oxidative ring cleavage of cyclohexene.

(i) % Atom economy formula:

% Atom economy=Molar mass of desired productSum of molar masses of all products formed×100\%\ Atom\ economy = \dfrac{Molar\ mass\ of\ desired\ product}{Sum\ of\ molar\ masses\ of\ all\ products\ formed} \times 100

It measures how much of the total mass of reactants ends up in the desired (useful) product versus being wasted as by-products — a key green-chemistry efficiency metric.

(ii)(a) Benzene into benzaldehyde (Gattermann–Koch reaction): Benzene is treated with carbon monoxide and hydrogen chloride gas in the presence of anhydrous AlCl3AlCl_3 (catalysed by cuprous chloride, CuClCuCl), which generates the formyl cation that substitutes onto the ring.
