A Grignard reagent, R-Mg-X, has a polar covalent C-Mg bond in which carbon pulls electron density away from the more electropositive magnesium, leaving carbon with a partial negative charge (section 10.6.6).
Step 2. State the consequence of that polarity. This makes the Grignard reagent's carbon strongly nucleophilic, and it reacts readily with water: R-Mg-X + H2O -> R-H + Mg(OH)X.
