Chlorobenzene from aniline via diazotisation + Sandmeyer reaction; diphenyl from chlorobenzene via the Fittig reaction with sodium.

Chlorobenzene from aniline: aniline is first converted to benzenediazonium chloride by diazotisation — treating it with sodium nitrite and dilute hydrochloric acid at 0–5°C:

C6H5NH2+NaNO2+2HCl→0-5∘CC6H5N2+Cl−+NaCl+2H2OC_6H_5NH_2 + NaNO_2 + 2HCl \xrightarrow{0\text{-}5^\circ C} C_6H_5N_2^+Cl^- + NaCl + 2H_2O

The diazonium salt is then warmed with cuprous chloride in the presence of HCl (Sandmeyer reaction), replacing the diazonium group with chlorine and releasing nitrogen gas:

C6H5N2+Cl−→Cu2Cl2/HCl, ΔC6H5Cl+N2↑C_6H_5N_2^+Cl^- \xrightarrow{Cu_2Cl_2/HCl,\ \Delta} C_6H_5Cl + N_2\uparrow
