A semipermeable membrane selectively passes solvent, not solute; a reference electrode provides a fixed known potential for comparison.

(a) Semipermeable membrane: a membrane (natural, e.g. a cell membrane/parchment, or artificial, e.g. cellophane/copper ferrocyanide) having pores small enough to allow the passage of solvent molecules (e.g. water) through it, but too small to allow the passage of larger solute molecules or ions. This selective permeability is what enables osmosis — net solvent flow from a region of lower solute concentration to higher solute concentration across the membrane.
