Osmosis is solvent migration across a semipermeable membrane; measuring the boiling-point elevation of a solution of known composition gives the solute's molar mass.

Osmosis: the spontaneous net flow of solvent molecules from a region of lower solute concentration (or pure solvent) to a region of higher solute concentration, through a semipermeable membrane that allows solvent but not solute to pass, continuing until the chemical potentials (or, practically, until the osmotic pressure) equalises.

Molar mass determination by elevation of boiling point: a known mass w2w_2 (g) of the non-volatile solute is dissolved in a known mass w1w_1 (g) of solvent, and the boiling point elevation ΔTb\Delta T_b is measured experimentally. The molality of the solution is:

m=w2×1000M2×w1m = \dfrac{w_2\times1000}{M_2\times w_1}
