Boiling-point elevation is proportional to molality, giving a direct route to a solute's molar mass; van't Hoff–Avogadro's law parallels Avogadro's law for osmotic pressure.

Derivation of molar mass from boiling-point elevation:

Elevation in boiling point is directly proportional to the molality of the solution: ΔTb∝m\Delta T_b \propto m, i.e. ΔTb=Kb m\Delta T_b = K_b\,m, where KbK_b is the molal elevation constant (ebullioscopic constant).

If w2w_2 g of a non-volatile solute of molar mass M2M_2 is dissolved in w1w_1 g of solvent, molality m=w2×1000M2×w1m = \dfrac{w_2 \times 1000}{M_2 \times w_1}.

Substituting: ΔTb=Kb×w2×1000M2×w1\Delta T_b = \dfrac{K_b \times w_2 \times 1000}{M_2 \times w_1}

Rearranging for the solute's molar mass:

M2=1000 Kb w2ΔTb w1M_2 = \frac{1000\,K_b\,w_2}{\Delta T_b\,w_1}
