Step 1. Roasting. Finely powdered chromite ore (FeO.Cr2O3) is heated with anhydrous sodium carbonate (Na2CO3) and a lime flux in air, in a reverberatory furnace: 4(FeO.Cr2O3) + 8Na2CO3 + 7O2 -(heat)-> 8Na2CrO4 + 2Fe2O3 + 8CO2. This gives sodium chromate (Na2CrO4).

Step 2. Extraction and acidification. The sodium chromate formed is extracted from the roasted mass using water, then treated with concentrated sulfuric acid to convert it to sodium dichromate (with sodium chloride and hydrated sodium sulfate as by-products): 2Na2CrO4 + H2SO4 -> Na2Cr2O7 + 2NaCl + Na2Cr2O7.H2O. …
