Subtraction of two vectors

Subtraction has already been introduced above as aˉ−bˉ=aˉ+(−bˉ)\bar a-\bar b=\bar a+(-\bar b): to subtract bˉ\bar b from

aˉ\bar a, reverse bˉ\bar b's arrow and apply the triangle law. In coordinate form this is simply subtracting

like components. If AB→=aˉ\overrightarrow{AB}=\bar a and BC→=bˉ\overrightarrow{BC}=\bar b, and DD is constructed with

BD→=−BC→\overrightarrow{BD}=-\overrightarrow{BC}, then triangle law in △ABD\triangle ABD gives

AD→=AB→+BD→=AB→−BC→=aˉ−bˉ\overrightarrow{AD}=\overrightarrow{AB}+\overrightarrow{BD}=\overrightarrow{AB}-\overrightarrow{BC}=\bar a-\bar b. This picture -- reverse one vector, then add tip-to-tail -- is exactly how aˉ−bˉ\bar a-\bar b is drawn …
