The hysteresis loop (Fig. 11.11, section 11.6) is the closed curve traced out by plotting a ferromagnetic material's flux density B against the applied field intensity H as it is taken through one full cycle: from unmagnetised, up to positive saturation, back down through a nonzero retentivity at H=0, on to a nonzero coercivity where B first returns to zero, further to negative saturation, back up through a reversed retentivity, and finally back to positive saturation, closing the loop. It represents the fact that B does NOT depend only on the instantaneous value of H -- it also depends on the material's magnetic HISTORY (which values of H it has already been driven through), because the internal domain structure never fully retraces its earlier configuration.
