Centripetal force is the net inward (centre-directed) force needed to keep a body moving on a circular path.

Any body moving with speed vv on a circular path of radius rr has an acceleration directed towards the centre of the circle, called centripetal acceleration, of magnitude ac=v2/ra_c = v^2/r (equivalently ω2r\omega^2 r). By Newton's second law, this acceleration must be produced by a net force directed towards the centre — this is the centripetal force,

Fc=mv2r=mω2rF_c = \frac{mv^2}{r} = m\omega^2 r
