Torque on a rotating body equals the rate of change of angular momentum, giving τ=Iα\tau = I\alpha for constant II.

Consider a rigid body rotating about a fixed axis with moment of inertia II. Its angular momentum is L=IωL = I\omega. By definition, torque is the rate of change of angular momentum:

τ=dLdt=d(Iω)dt\tau = \frac{dL}{dt} = \frac{d(I\omega)}{dt}

For a rigid body, II is constant (mass distribution about the axis doesn't change), so

τ=Idωdt=Iα\tau = I\frac{d\omega}{dt} = I\alpha

where α=dω/dt\alpha = d\omega/dt is the (here constant) angular acceleration. Thus

τ=Iα\boxed{\tau = I\alpha}
