Angular momentum stays constant in the absence of external torque.

Statement: If the net external torque acting on a system is zero, its total angular momentum remains constant (both in magnitude and direction).

Proof: For a rotating body/system, the net external torque equals the rate of change of angular momentum:

τ⃗ext=dL⃗dt\vec{\tau}_{ext} = \frac{d\vec{L}}{dt}

This follows directly from Newton's second law in rotational form (τ=Iα=Idωdt=d(Iω)dt=dLdt\tau = I\alpha = I\dfrac{d\omega}{dt} = \dfrac{d(I\omega)}{dt} = \dfrac{dL}{dt}, valid even if II itself changes, e.g. a skater pulling in their arms).
