AND Gate

16.5.3

AND Gate

The AND gate has two (or more) inputs and a single output, and represents LOGICAL MULTIPLICATION. Its output Y is 1 (high) ONLY when ALL of its inputs are simultaneously 1 (high) -- for the standard two-input case, only when BOTH input A and input B are 1 together does the output become 1; in every other combination, the output stays 0 (low). Its Boolean expression is Y=A⋅BY=A\cdot B (Fig. 16.29), where the '⋅\cdot' symbol denotes the logical AND operation, directly analogous to ordinary multiplication (since multi …

What this figure shows. A shape with a flat, STRAIGHT vertical back edge on the input side, transitioning into a rounded, SEMICIRCULAR (D-shaped) front on the output side -- the standard AND-gate shape, distinct from the OR gate's curved-back outline. Two separate input lines (A and B) enter the flat back edge from the left, and a single output line (labelled Y=A⋅BY=A\cdot B) leaves the …

Table T16.29Truth table for the two-input AND gate, printed alongside Fig. 16.29's symbol, showing all four possible combinations of inputs A and B and the resulting output Y, confirming that Y is 1 in exactly one row (both inputs high) and 0 in every other row
